Turaga stresses process amidst delays
ATTORNEY-GENERAL Siromi Turaga says there is a sense of urgency to appoint a substantive Supervisor of Elections, Auditor-General and Commissioner of Corrections.
However, Mr Turaga said due process would still be followed to appoint the appropriate people to these constitutional office positions.
He said the Constitutional Offices Commission was following the relevant processes before any appointment would be made.
Mr Turaga said regular updates and consultations were being made with the Prime Minister and COC members before a meeting is called.
“We continually update the
PM and the update that we give to the PM we also submit to the members,” he said.
“The COC are currently waiting for another process to be completed before it can be finalised or make deliberations as to who the three important considerations are.
“We are not only looking at SOE.
“We are also considering the
Commissioner of Corrections and the Auditor General.
“We are waiting for that process to be submitted to us before we sit. Unfortunately, that process has been prolonged.”
He said the secretariat would continue to provide these regular briefs before any decision was made.
“We have volunteer lawyers who provide these briefs, then they are given out to the Commission members and these take time to get their feedback.
“We continue to reach out and once they provide their feedback and once they do, then we move forward to the next one.”
Mr Turaga confirmed the three panels set up to interview candidates for the posts have submitted their report to the secretariat.
