Alleged Hit and Run Driver Bailed
The driver who allegedly caused the death of a fiveyear-old boy along the Lekutu-Nabouwalu Highway in Bua, was bailed on strict grounds at the Labasa Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Ashneel Sahil Deo appeared before Magistrate Bimsara Jagodage.
It is alleged that Deo failed to stop after the alleged accident. He is charged with one count each of dangerous driving occasioning death and failure to comply with requirements following an accident. On June 15, 2024, the minor was standing with his father in an attempt to cross the road it is alleged that the minor suddenly ran across the road.
The minor passed away a day later at the Labasa Hospital.
The driver was on the run from Police for five days after the accident and was arrested on June 19.
It is alleged the accused opted to remain silent during the police caution interview at the initial investigations.
Police prosecutor, Sergeant Vignesh Prasad, did not object to bail, however, informed the court for two sureties to be arranged by defense.
Defense lawyer, John Prasad, argued if one surety could be accepted, however, later agreed to two sureties.
A cash bail bond of $1000 was also imposed.
Magistrate Jagodage bailed the accused on the following conditions: Not to reoffend, stay at Naduna, Labasa with his father and not to change his address.
Deo’s was told by the court to appear on all mention dates until the case is disposed, with emphasis placed on the accused not to interfere with State witnesses.
The accused was told not to apply for any travel documents while the case is active.
The case was adjourned to August 29, 2024, for plea at the Nabouwalu Magistrate’s Court.
Deo’s lawyer, Mr Prasad, sought the court’s permission to shift the matter to Labasa Magistrates Court.
However, Magistrates Jagodage asked the lawyer to make an application for case transfer.
