At 55, Selita Bausiata still works to support her family. The mother of seven works for the Pacific Fishing Company Pte Limited (PAFCO) at Levuka, Ovalau.

Ms Bausiata has been part of the PAFCO fish cleaning production department for the past 24 years. She is from the Solomon Islands, but lives at Tokou Village with her family.

She works to support her family and her children’s education.

Last week she was part of the Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC) Conference in Nadi.

She was pleased of the news from FTUC general secretary Felix Anthony of the proposed minimum wage rate of $6 an hour. Ms Bausiata hopes Government would approve the new rate in its coming National Budget announcement.

“Being a working mother for years and supporting the family was not always easy. I am always thankful to my husband who is a farmer for supporting me,” she said.

She shares the importance of Mother’s Day.

“Mother’s Day is always a special day for us mothers. I am grateful that there is a day that is significantly to remember all mothers, their sacrifices, their love and commitment to their families. “We mothers have great influence in the family than fathers. Even without fathers, mothers can hold the family together. Discipline, management, love and moral living are always taught by us mothers.

“Most successful people attribute their achievements to their mothers. So, during this Mother’s Day, we will celebrate the lives of mothers who had left us, mothers now and those who will become mothers in the future.”
