The inclusion of Moses Sorovi in the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua squad even on a shortterm contract has made his father happy.

Speaking from Sydney, Australia, Mosese Sorovi (Snr) said it was the best news ever when told that his namesake was joining the Drua. “I’m happy that at least Yaca (namesake) is going over to train with the Drua boys for four weeks and get to understand each other in terms of combination ,” Sorovi (Snr) said.

“I always tell Yaca to go and play for Fiji because those boys are his relations. I’m happy that he has got to know the Drua boys.”

Sorovi has played 39 Super Rugby games- 37 for the Queensland Reds and two for the Melbourne Rebels. He also has two Test caps with the Flying Fijians.

The 28-year-old was drafted into the Drua following the six weeks suspension of Frank Lomani and the wrist injury to Philip Baselala. Sorovi also plays No.10 for Wests Bulldogs Rugby in the Queensland Premier League. He scored two tries in their 43-17 win over Red Heavies last weekend.

New coach

Meanwhile, the Drua will now undertake a process to appoint a new head coach to replace Mick Byrne. This was stated in a release from the Drua chief executive officer Mark Evans after Byrne was appointed the Flying Fijians head coach to replace Simon Raiwalui. “Everybody here at the Drua is delighted that Mick has been appointed to the national team as head coach,” Evans said.

“He’s done a terrific job here at the Drua, and we’re sure that he will do the same for the Flying Fijians.

“We are also very confident that he will be completely focused on the remainder of the Super Rugby season whilst he’s still with us. Once that is completed, hopefully some time into June, he will be able to give the national team his full focus and attention.”

It is understood the contenders for the Drua’s head coach’s job is current assistant coach Glen Jackson along with former Drua forwards coach and now Rebels defence coach Brad Harris.
