‘Sevens rugby divert youths from drugs, kava consumption’

- SEREANA SALALO

Involving youths in rugby diverts them from drug abuse and over consumption of kava. This was the comment of Tagova team manager Manueli Tubunasiga.

Tubunasiga said, the mentioned issues led to the formation of the team to participate in local rugby sevens tournaments.

The side braved the seas of Yasawa

to take part in the Fiji Bitter Tabadamu Sevens last weekend at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori and the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s which kicked-off yesterday at the HFC Bank Stadium, Suva.

They had to travel by fiber glass boats from Waya to Lautoka then hired a mini-bus to the tournament destinations.

Tubunasiga said the total cost of travel, accommodation and food is almost $4000.

Tagova Club is one of the two teams from Namara Village, Waya Lailai. The other team is the Namara Blues.

Tubunasiga indicated that playing in the series has been a great exposure for the young men.

“This team was only formed in November, last year to take part in the Nacula tournament – it is part of a three-year plan put together by our clan,” he said.

“It is to prevent youths from indulging in illegal activities including drug abuse. “Since the formation of this team we have seen an improvement in their discipline as well as mental, spiritual and physical fitness. “Just like every other team here for the Marist 7s, we want to showcase our talent.”

Despite the challenges, Tubunasiga is grateful for the support of their minor sponsors including resort owners in Waya Lailai, relatives and one of their sons Jiuta Wainiqolo who contributed to the team financial and others through in-kind donations.

This has assisted the team immensely in their preparation, travel. accommodation and participation at various tournaments. “None of the team members or officials is employed. We usually hold coffee nights back home and do odd jobs to help finance our team– in addition to contributions from our supporters.

“This is the start of great things for this team.”

The competition continues today.
