The National Fire Authority (NFA) is ready to deploy its personnel to help members of the public during this period of heavy rain.

The assurance by NFA’s chief executive officer, Puamau Sowane, follows a recent assistance they responded to on Tuesday night. Mr Sowane confirmed they received a customer complaint call via their toll-free number 910, which prompted the dispatch of a team.

The call came from a resident at Cliffton Road, Kalabu Housing Estate, who needed help with clearing up debris clogged up in their drain behind their house.

“Debris and rubbish from the housing at the top had clogged up the drain behind the family’s house,” he said.

“From the clog, the water had started to sip into the house and it took our team more than two hours to clear that drain.” Mr Puamau said the NFA operated 24 hours and seven days a week, which gives members of the public the freedom to call in case of emergency.

“Make use of the service that is widely available throughout our fire stations in Fiji for emergency purposes,” he said.

“Our people do attend to any type of rescue, whether it would be fire rescue, flood and swift water rescue, height rescue, or any other emergency that is threatening their lives and their properties we can attend to it and our people are well trained for it.”

National Disaster and Management’s (NDMO) director Vasiti Soko said the event was a stark reminder of the collective effort needed to tackle the problem of inadequate drainage, particularly in the immediate vicinity.

“These proactive measures will maintain waterflow, particularly during heavy rain,” she said.
