EFA Medical Committee investigating Kwanele’s demise

- By Sibusiso Masilela

The Eswatini Football Association (EFA) has instituted an investigation following the death of Manzini Wanderers defender Kwanele Dlamini.

The ex-Denver Sundowns player passed on after collapsing during a stokvel (unofficial tournament) match played at Ndunayithini, Lavumisa on New Year’s Eve.

EFA Medical Committee Chairman Welcome Motsa confirmed the probe.

“We have been deeply saddened by the passing of the player, and we want to express our deepest condolences to his family, team, and the entire football fraternity for the loss of such a promising talent. We will probe the matter to ascertain the real cause of his death,” he said.

Motsa further expressed concerns over Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) players’ participation in stokvel tournaments.

“We are worried about the number of Premier League players who are participating in these festive tournaments, which are difficult to monitor because they are not within our jurisdiction. One can advise stokvel organizers to ensure that they avail medical service providers, such as EMS who are always available to assist the nation,” he said.

The player was laid to rest on Saturday at his parental homestead Ndunayithini after a memorial service held at Manzini Central High School Hall on Friday.

The player had joined the hub giants from cross-city rivals Denver Sundowns and became the fourth player to pass on this season after the Ubombo Flyers duo of Simanga Kutsemba, Phumlani Masango and Denver Sundowns striker Mukelo Nkambule.

Meanwhile, the PLE have also mourned the passing of the players together Masango and Nkambule who recently passed away.

This is according to a statement recently released by the topflight football entity Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kenneth Makhanya.*
