A mainland visitor was arrested on her birthday yesterday on suspicion of fatally stabbing her alleged lover in a taxi in the New Territories.

The suspect’s female friend, a 37-year-old resident, was also apprehended less than four hours after the incident on suspicion of aiding and abetting her, a source familiar with the case said.

The attack took place at a taxi rank in Shui Pin Wai Estate on Ma Miu Road, Yuen Long.

Basil Tang Yick-kay, assistant Yuen Long district commander (crime), said the two women and the 48-year-old man were in the taxi after congregating nearby when a fight broke out.

The woman, who turned 36 yesterday, was said to have a twoway permit. Her husband, 29, was also arrested in Tin Shui Wai at 7pm for aiding and abetting her, according to the source.

“The taxi driver overheard the man and one of the women arguing over relationship issues before the two women jumped out of the vehicle,” the source said.

He added that the women left the cab, got into another taxi and were driven off. The driver then noticed the male passenger was still sitting in the back seat of the cab, but that he was motionless, according to the source.

The 54-year-old taxi driver then called the police soon after 4am.

“An initial examination shows that the victim was stabbed in the right and left sides of his chest and he was unconscious when emergency personnel arrived,” the source said.

The victim was taken to Pok Oi Hospital in Yuen Long, but declared dead.

The mainland woman was arrested at Tin Ching Estate in Tin Shui Wai, about 4km from Shui Pin Wai Estate, 1½ hours later. A 25cm knife was found.

The city resident was detained on the estate at about 8.15am.
