Ambulance hits moose on way to moose-car crash

- GORDON PAUL REPORTER

A car hit a moose. Then the ambulance responding to the scene hit a different moose.

At 1 a.m. on May 19, a car struck a moose on Highway 60 near Tea Lake in Algonquin Park. The car left the road and hit a tree. Both occupants were taken to hospital. A Quebec woman, 40, had life-threatening injuries.

“One of the two Muskoka Paramedic Service ambulances responding to the scene also collided with a moose,” OPP said. “It was extensively damaged, but no injuries were reported in that collision.”

Officers who responded to the first crash had just finished investigating another car-moose crash, with no serious injuries. Police did not say whether the three moose died.

“The OPP warns motorists that an increasing number of moose have been coming out of the forest and onto roads, particularly in the area of Algonquin Park, in an effort to escape from swarms of insects,” police said.

On May 5 at 10:30 p.m., a car hit a moose in Cochrane, 400 kilometres north of Sudbury.

“The driver and passenger suffered minor injuries,” OPP said, “including a hoof coming through the driver’s side window.”
