Arsenal wins tense North London derby

-

Arsenal left archrival Tottenham's stadium with a win for the third season in a row after Gabriel Magalhaes' second-half header settled a feisty and physical north London derby in the Premier League on Sunday.

Tottenham had Arsenal pegged back for much of the game but couldn't make its chances count as the visitors weathered the pressure before Gabriel secured a 1-0 win by scoring in the 64th minute. The Brazilian centre back lost his marker and met a corner from Bukayo Saka with a thumping header from the middle of the box.

“It is a big derby and we are so happy to win here,” said Gabriel, who celebrated boisterously in front of the away fans after the final whistle. “Let's enjoy it now.”

The goal came largely against the run of play but secured a vital victory for Arsenal, which is already two points behind defending champion Manchester City and could ill afford to drop more points ahead of a trip to the Etihad Stadium next weekend.

In the only other EPL game

Sunday, Harvey Barnes completed a turnaround for Newcastle with a longrange strike into the top corner in the 80th minute to seal a 2-1 away win at Wolverhampton.

SPANISH LA LIGA

With two goals in less than 10 minutes, Lamine Yamal led Barcelona to its fifth straight victory at the start of the Spanish league season.

The teenager's double, plus secondhalf goals by Dani Olmo and Pedri, gave Barcelona a commanding 4-1 win at Catalan rival Girona, keeping its lead over Real Madrid at four points.

Earlier Sunday, Celta Vigo beat Valladolid 3-1 at home for its first win after two consecutive losses.

ITALIAN SERIE A

Napoli might have a new hero in Romelu Lukaku.

The former Chelsea forward set up two goals and also scored as Napoli won 4-0 at Cagliari on Sunday for its third straight victory in the Italian league.

There are positive signs that, under new coach Antonio Conte, Napoli is starting to look more like the team that stormed to the league title in 2023 and less like the troubled side of last season.

Conte lost his first league match in charge but Napoli has won all three since then, scoring nine goals and conceding just one.

Defending champion Inter Milan narrowly avoided its first defeat of the season as it salvaged a 1-1 draw at Monza. Ahead of Wednesday's Champions League match at Manchester City, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi rotated his squad and almost paid the price.

GERMAN BUNDESLIGA

Fabian Hurzeler is the English Premier League's new star manager after going unbeaten in his first four league games at Brighton. His former club, St. Pauli, is in trouble already.

The 31-year-old Texas-born coach got Hamburg-based St. Pauli promoted back to the Bundesliga last season for the first time since 2011, but left a month later to join Brighton.

Three games into the Bundesliga season and St. Pauli has yet to earn a point. Now coached by Alexander Blessin, Sunday's 3-1 loss at Augsburg left St. Pauli in the relegation zone. At least it shed the unwanted record of being the league's only team yet to score a goal.

Also Sunday, Werder Bremen held on for a 2-1 win at Mainz despite playing the last half-hour with 10 men.

FRENCH LIGUE 1

Montpellier is last in the table following Angers' 1-1 draw at Strasbourg and is still winless after its 3-0 loss at Rennes on Sunday that marked its third defeat in four matches so far.

Ludovic Blas put the hosts in front in the 24th minute and goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo and Albert Gronbaek completed the win. It was Rennes' second victory this season.

Montpellier became the first team since Strasbourg during the 20002001 season to concede 13 goals after four league matches.
