Come try the unique craft of spoon carving
Suggested donation to the event is $5 to $20
The Spoon Carving Guild meets Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Camp Kawartha Environment Centre, located at 2505 Pioneer Rd.
Interested community members are invited to attend.
“Spoon Carving Guild is a community group run by a few folks simply excited to carve together. It started in a backyard in December 2022 and has grown ever since,” said Sammy Tangir, one of the group’s organizers.
“Our hope is to create opportunities to spread the love of woodlore and invite people to try this craft. We love carving spoons as they are both useful and beautiful. Carving provides an opportunity to connect with trees, each other and get out of our sometimes busy minds and into our bodies.”
What should you bring to the gathering? If you have carving tools such as a straight knife, hook knife, or axe, bring them. But, if you don’t own your own, there is a bin full of the necessary tools you can borrow, thanks to the support of the United Way of Peterborough. Additionally, bring wood for your carving project and extra to share if you have it. There will be some extras there, as well.
Also, bring your ambition to start a spoon carving project and/or your present carving projects to work on. You can also bring carving or related crafts for show-and-tell.
Bring a mug for tea and some nutfree snacks to share.
“This project has been greatly supported by United Way Peterborough,” said Tangir. “Their community grant has made it possible to have tools to share, space to use and has supported organizing these gatherings.”
A suggested donation for the event is $5 to $20, which will go to support the continued use of the Environment Centre. There will be a donation jar.

Also, an advanced carving workshop with John Wager, from John’s Woodenware, will be held Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. Participants will start from a fresh log and learn how to safely axe a spoon blank from it before moving over to the sloyd knife and hook knife.
