Pownal off to junior C championships

Ice Dogs begin round-robin play against Tri-county on April 24

-

The Pownal Tri County Insulfoam Ice Dogs will represent P.E.I. at the Maritime junior C hockey championship in Miramichi, N.B., April 25-28.

The Ice Dogs look to continue their dominating season where they finished the regular season with 23 wins in 25 games in the Township Chevrolet Island Junior Hockey League.

They will be competing against Tri-county (New Brunswick), the Southwest Storm (Nova Scotia) and the Sunny Corner Thunder (Host).

The Ice Dogs lost 4-1 to the Tignish Aces in the P.E.I. league final series. However, with work commitments (fishing), the Aces could not ice enough players for the regional championship, so the runner-up Ice Dogs agreed to represent the province.

The Ice Dogs will look to scoring leader Noah Brehaut to lead the way offensively. Brehaut recorded 37 points in 25 games.

Mason Atkinson, Jet Trainor and Sam Worth are expected provide offence to the high-scoring Ice Dogs.

Pownal gonaltdenders Ethan Smith, who led the league in goals-against average, and Caleb Drake provide solid netminding. Michael Kiley and Cale Archibald lead a steady defensive unit.

The Ice Dogs start play on April 24 against Tri-county at 4:30 p.m. and take on the Thunder on April 25 at 7:30 p.m. Pownal completes round-robin play against the Storm on April 26 at 4:30 p.m.

The semifinal games will be played on April 27, and the championship game goes April 28 at 1 p.m.

All games will be played at the Miramichi Civic Centre.
