- Postmedia wire services

Montreal's Gabriel Diallo made a big move up the ATP ranking on Monday after his solid performance at the U.S. Open.

The 22-year-old moved 40 spots up to 103rd on the men's tennis ranking thanks to his 2-1 record at the final Grand Slam of the season.

Diallo lost to Tommy Paul in four sets in the third round of the U.S. Open on Aug. 31. He's now the third highest-ranked Canadian on the men's tour behind No. 21 Felix Auger-aliassime of Montreal and No. 100 Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont.

Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., remains the topranked Canadian on the WTA Tour at 26th.

Vancouver's Rebecca Marino moved up 11 spots to sit at 128th for second highest.

Canadian linebacker Dan

Basambombo signed with the Calgary Stampeders on Monday and was added to the team's practice roster. The six-foot, 225-pound Basambombo was selected out of the Universite Laval in the second round of the 2020 CFL draft by the Ottawa Redblacks.

He played 23 games with Ottawa in 2021 and 2022, recording six special-teams tackles. Basambombo played 14 games across three seasons at Laval, recording 42 tackles, including four for loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.

Basambombo was born in Congo and moved to Canada with his family at the age of nine.

Browns tight end David Njoku could miss several weeks with a sprained ankle suffered in Sunday's season-opening loss to Dallas, another concern for a Cleveland offence with multiple issues.

Njoku finished with four catches for 44 yards before his injury.

Njoku, who led Cleveland in receptions and touchdowns last season, got hurt while being tackled after a 29-yard gain — the Browns' longest play — in the third quarter of a 33-17 defeat.

The Browns are also missing tackles Jack Conklin and Jedrick Wills Jr., who were both inactive Sunday after coming back from knee surgeries. The Browns play at Jacksonville on Sunday.

Carolina Panthers Pro Bowl defensive lineman Derrick Brown will need surgery on his knee and could miss the remainder of the season. Brown injured a meniscus in the Panthers' 47-10 loss to the Saints and his loss would be a huge blow to a defence that struggled on Sunday, allowing New Orleans to score on its first nine possessions. The surgery will determine how long Brown will be out, but a source confirmed his season is likely over.

Brown set an NFL record for a tackles by a defensive lineman in 2023 with 103.

The injury comes after Carolina gave the No. 7 overall pick in 2020 a fouryear, Us$96-million extension earlier this off-season. Brown was selected one of the team's defensive captains last week.
