MOTIVATED MUNICIPALITIES
With the help of the AMBM Group and its partners, member municipalities have taken action to improve living conditions on their territory. Here are a few examples:
VILLAGE OF SAINT-PIERRE-JOLYS
“The will to welcome is there, but there’s a lack of housing. So two new developments are underway to add 80 multi-family housing units in Saint-pierrejolys. In part, the idea is to offer rental housing, which is very hard to find these days. With EWC, we are also carrying out feasibility studies for an extension to the Manoir.
“Another area for improvement is transportation. We’re part of the Southeast Regional Transportation Initiative, which includes the entire Southeast from Lorette to Piney. We’re trying to see how we can work together to offer transportation service to people who want to go into town, for example, and reduce our carbon footprint. At the same time, we’re working on a car-sharing project with the Rural Municipality of Ritchot. We should be able to launch it soon.”
In addition, the Village of Saint-pierre-jolys and the Rural Municipality of De Salaberry already offer on-demand access to two vans. “We’re now planning to add a third van for medical appointments at the hospital.”
On the recreational side, “we’re working on a new project for the whole region, the Southeast Recreation and Wellness Campus. The goal is to offer different activity options, because not all newcomers want to play hockey!”
Early childhood is another challenge. “We have 180 babies waiting for a place in a Francophone or bilingual daycare centre. We’re working with the CDEM and FPFM (Fédération des parents de la francophonie manitobaine) to support the opening of family daycare centres. ■
