-

Canada's Leylah Fernandez picked up a pair of wins Monday at the Qatar Open women's tennis tournament.

Fernandez, from Laval, Que., advanced to the second round of the singles draw with a 7-5, 7-6 (4) win over 12th seed Liudmila Samsonova of Russia.

She then teamed with Oksana Kalashnikova of Georgia for a 6-4, 3-6, 13-11 victory over Italian duo Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani in the opening round of doubles.

Next up for Fernandez is Spanish wild card Paula Badosa in singles, while she and Kalashnikova will battle the top-seeded team of Belgium's Elise Mertens and Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan in doubles.

Meanwhile, Milos Raonic's powerful serve was in full effect Monday as the Canadian veteran ousted Jesper De Jong of the Netherlands 7-6 (5), 6-4 in first-round play at the ABN Amro Open in Rotterdam. Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., fired 20 aces.

PWHL Toronto is going to play in yet one more NONPWHL arena this season. The league announced Monday the club's Feb. 27 game in Minnesota will be played at the University of Minnesota's 10,000seat 3M Arena at Mariucci rather than the Xcel Energy Centre that PWHL Minnesota normally calls home.

That rink is home to the Golden Gophers and is widely considered one of the most iconic arenas in NCAA hockey.

It was previously announced Toronto would move its Feb. 16 game against Montreal to Scotiabank Arena (already sold out) and the March 17 game scheduled for Montreal will now be played at Pittsburgh's PPG Paints Arena (home to the NHL'S Penguins).

Minnesota boasts seven former Gophers on its roster, including young stars Taylor Heise and Grace Zumwinkle, who only recently graduated.

The University of New Brunswick Reds men's hockey team capped off a perfect regular season during the weekend with a resounding win over the University of Prince Edward Island. With Saturday's 9-1 victory, the Reds finished the regular season undefeated with 30 straight wins.

The country's top-ranked team is the first to record a perfect season since the Western Mustangs went 24-0 in the 2002-03 season.

The men's hockey program at the Fredericton-based school has won nine national and 19 Atlantic University Sport titles.

Canada's Sydney Pickrem swam to a silver medal in the women's 200-metre medley Monday at the world aquatics championships.

Pickrem, who was born in Florida to parents from Halifax, finished with a personal best time of two minutes, 8.56 seconds.

Kate Douglass of the U.S. (2:07.05) won gold.

It's Canada's second swimming medal of the world championships after the 4x100 relay team picked up a bronze on Sunday.
