Two men charged with murder after human remains found at abandoned Queensland quarry
Queensland police have charged two men with murder after the remains of a man were located at an abandoned quarry on the Sunshine Coast.
The 25-year-old Morayfield man, Malahki “Jai” Gray, was reported missing on 4 June. A homicide investigation was launched and two men from Caboolture were arrested on 11 June.
It will be alleged the two men lured the 25-year-old to a Glass House Mountains property where they stabbed him, and that all three men knew each other. The 25-year-old’s remains were located at an abandoned quarry near Mount Ngungun on 11 June.
Det InspDavid Harbison said police were investigating whether Gray was killed over a “small debt”.
“Investigations reveal that Jai was lured to a location at Glass House where it is believed he was murdered on the evening of 28 May,” he said.
“Police allege Jai was stabbed multiple times by the two offenders that have been arrested for murder.”
Harbison said Gray’s disability carer and family members had provided investigators with “pivotal” information that resulted in the Rupert Cres home being declared a “missing persons crime scene” on 8 June.
“Subsequently, four persons known to Jai were located and interviewed by police,” Harbison said.
“A vehicle owned by one of those persons was also declared a missing person crime scene and seized.
“By 10 June, detectives were of the belief that Jai had met with foul play and formally commenced a homicide investigation.”
A 22-year-old man has been charged with one count each of murder and misconduct with a corpse by interfering and was due to appear in the Caboolture magistrates court on Wednesday.
A 19-year-old man has also been charged with one count each of murder and misconduct with a corpse by interfering and is also due to appear before the same court.
A third man was taken into custody but has been released without charge. Investigations continue.
